This necklace is unusual for so many reasons. It is very rare to find a Durga amulet in which the lion is looking forward (instead of being in profile). In fact, in my 15 years of collecting, this is the first I saw, so of course, I had to buy it. (If you look closely, our feline seems to also have a bit of a jaunty gait, too -- charming!) Natural coral is also quite scarce. Most of what is on the market has been dyed. These coral beads are doubly nice since they've been given a higher polish. There are four different designs of new and old Thai silver beads within the strand for added intrigue. Their cylindrical shape echos that of the corals. Small hematite beads between each coral bead prevent them from abrading each other, and there's a pretty coral charm by the Balinese silver toggle clasp.
The amulet is 3" high, and the necklace is 22" long. This piece is larger than most, and really makes a statement. Durga is a goddess who rides a lion and banishes fear. She is also the slayer of the Buffalo Demon. Just imagine the conversations you can have about this one! :-) Matching earrings are available and are shown below.
